My Yoga Journey

I have wanted start a yoga journey for quite awhile.  I took some yoga classes years ago and never went back to it due to, now realizing in hindsight, I wasn’t quite ready for the full journey.  It will be good for my body and soul, therefore, I have decided to dip my toe into the yoga pool. I cannot remember many of the poses so I feel that I am a beginning beginner.

One of the reasons that I haven’t been to a yoga class in forever is because I will feel embarrassment.  What if EVERYONE in the class knows all the poses hence I am the only one who doesn’t know them?  When I give it a second thought, however, I know that most yogis want to spread their love and knowledge of yoga so I shouldn’t be embarrassed.  If any group can be understanding of a beginner, it would be this group.

When I look for local classes, I have seen some beginning beginner classes, but they don’t fit into my schedule.  I want to start this journey NOW so I decided to do some research and take the first step.  Much needed information and supplies are a click or stretch away.  As a result of said research, I discovered some wonderful realities.

What do I need to start this wonderful journey?

Versatile clothes?  Yes!

Informational books?  Yes!

Essential Oils – Part V

It is astounding how many chemicals we are exposed to every single day.  In hopes of decreasing that number, I have been making some DIY essential oil products for my home.  The internet has so many great resources for essential oils and it can be overwhelming.  I just wanted to write another post to break it down a little and share the products that have been successful for me.  I hope you try some of them and are as pleased as I have been with adopting an essential oil lifestyle.

Hand Soap

Hand Soap : I used the recipe from Happy Mothering.  I got the exact hand soap pump as pictured in the post for $4.99 at TJ Maxx.  I LOVE this hand soap…smells great and makes your hands feel so clean.  A definite success.  I usually pay about $4.99 for each hand soap that I usually buy, so to pay that price for the pump and then I can just refill it for pennies, it’s so worth it.

Carpet Freshener

Carpet Freshener :  This recipe is from the Frugal Girls.  The tip about the parmesan cheese top on a mason jar works like a charm.  You can use any EO that you like.  I am currently using lavender, but can change it as the baking soda is used up.

Dryer Sheets

Dryer Sheets :  I used the recipe from View from the Fridge.  I bought a kitchen towel at Dollar Tree and cut it into little squares.  I used a mason jar to store the liquid and towel squares.  The squares frayed a bit after the first use, but the whole towel didn’t fit in the jar so I have lots of extra squares.  Also, I can just throw them out if they get really bad and buy another towel for $1.  The scent on the clothes after drying them was very subtle, which I like.  Some dryer sheets are just too overpowering for me not to mention they are FULL of chemicals.

Toilet Fizzies

Ice Cube Trays

Toilet Fizzies:  This recipe was from One Good Thing by Jillee.  I bought the ice cube trays from Dollar Tree.  They were plastic with silicone bottoms so that you could easily pop out each fizzy when it was dry.  I put a little bit too much water in mine so they fizzed over the top of the ice cube tray.  They still work fine and they leave a nice clean scent after they fizz.  I bought the citric acid on Amazon .

I buy most of my essential oils from Eden’s Garden .  I have had great luck with this company and they ship quickly.  I have also bought some EOs on Amazon.  Just put the EO you want in the search bar and many choices will appear.  My next DIY is some calming EOs for my dog who has extreme anxiety about fireworks and thunder storms.  Stay tuned for part Vl of my essential oils series. (This post contains affiliate links although the companies I listed within the post have not given me any products to write my post.)

Essential Oils – Part III

I started using essential oils about 6 weeks ago and I wish I had started using them sooner.  They are awesome.  My favorite company to order from is Eden’s Garden.  They are a small, independent company and they have great prices.  They also offer different sizes of EOs.  I love this company and their oils.

I have tried several mixtures since I wrote my last EO post and I also bought some products that I want to share.  I do not get any compensation for the reviews, links or products that I am writing about in this post.  I just want to share my successes with others so that they can have an easier time if they need or want to try them.  I made a cleaning mixture, reed diffuser and bought an electric diffuser that I will be writing about here.

Bathroom Cleaner:  I made this cleaner just this week.  I bought the castile soap at Trader Joe’s…they have the best price around.  I bought the glass spray bottle on Amazon.  I also bought some spray bottle at the dollar store and I am going to try using those nozzles on an empty vinegar bottle; a suggestion from the post.  I loved the smell of this cleaner, but the baking soda left a bit of a cloudy residue, so I’m going to use less baking soda the next time I make it.

Reed Diffuser :  I also made these reed diffusers this week.  I bought the bottles at TJ Maxx.  I made them several weeks ago with a wider mouth jar and they evaporated too quickly.  You really need to use small neck bottles.  I bought the reeds on Amazon…these are on the short side so if you get a tall bottle, they probably won’t be long enough.  I have this in my bathroom and I turn the reeds over every few days, which helps to bring out the scent.

Electric Diffuser :  I have wanted an electric diffuser for a long time.  I finally purchased one and I am so glad that I did.  I just plugged it in today and it is awesome.  I left the house and when I came back, the house smelled so fresh and clean.  I put in a mixture of lavender, orange and lemon…so refreshing.  I got a printable of spring diffuser blends and chose the seaside citrus blend.  Definitely a great investment and this one was actually a great price.

Essential Oil Faves

I have been using essential oils for about a month now and I have to say, why did I wait to try them out?  I have had some great successes with the ones I have used.  It is best if you have some supplies before you embark on your EO DIY journey.  These are some of the basic supplies that are needed:  roller bottles,  carrier oil , beeswax, jars, lip balm tubes, coconut oil and shea butter.  I bought all my supplies on Amazon or at Bulk Apothecary.  Both have a great selection.

Success 1 – I tried Digest Ease from Eden’s Garden.  I put some in a roller bottle with carrier oil and roll it on my stomach when I feel any type of nausea.  IT WORKS!!!  I just love it.

Success 2 – I tried Good Night also from Eden’s Garden.  I also put this in a roller bottle with a carrier oil.  I roll it on the bottom of my feet when I go to bed and it has really helped me get a better night’s sleep.

Success 3 – I made whipped body butter.   It is a great body moisturizer and you only need a small amount.  You can put any scent into it that you like.

Success 4 – I made acne stick to use on the occasional pimple that I get.  It worked really well and I am going to use it for my 13-year-old son too.

I tried making a DIY diffuser with vodka, water and EOs, but I did not have as much success with that one. My next DIYs with EOs will be magnesium lotion, vapor rub and cleaning solution.  I will do another post to share those outcomes.  Pinterest is such a great resource for EO uses and it can be a little overwhelming. I will pass on the recipes that have worked for me so that you’ll have an easy reference.

A Happier You #9 – Spring Energizer and Giveaway

Spring is right around the corner.  I know that where I live it has been a very mild winter…although we did get snow today.  I don’t mind the snow…it is partly why I love where I live.  I do, however, love to see spring return.  I think that my favorite thing about spring is when the crocuses first appear.  It’s so miraculous to me…those little flowers have been dormant for almost a year and yet they come back with their beauty year after year.  I just love to see them!!!

Just seeing those little beauties poke their heads out of the ground, and sometimes snow, gives me a burst of energy and gives me a surge of happiness.  Daylight lasts longer and it gets warmer.  Motivation rises and you feel like getting out there are doing more.  I love cleaning out the garden so that I can see more flowers bloom with their beautiful colors.

In keeping with the energy of spring, Stephanie (from Balance Now Zen and Pow) and I have put together a Spring Energizer giveaway.  It includes a blender bottle, tea, headbands and grapefruit essential oil.  Way to get energized!!!!  Please enter below.

A Happier You #7 – My First Adventure with Essential Oils

I have been reading all the posts and pins about essential oils for quite a long time.  I always had some lavender essential oil kicking around because I heard it calms you.  I also tried making some bug spray with essential oils because regular bug spray is so toxic and doesn’t seem to work anyway.  I never really got into mixing with carrier oils to make roller bottles.  I’ve always wanted to, but I just never put the time into it.  Well….I started this past week and I am so glad that I did.  What was I waiting for???

If you have wanted to use essential oils, but weren’t sure how to go about it, I’m going to tell you the steps I took to educate myself.  First, I read some blogs posts on how to use essential oils.  The majority of the posts said that you would need 3 things to get started:  the essential oils, roller bottles and carrier oil.  I looked on Amazon for these products because they usually have the best deals.  I chose all my products based on pricing and I have to say they are all great products.  (These are not affiliate links so I do not get paid for my opinion.)

Second, I looked on Pinterest.  There are a plethora of pins about essential oils.  I found several that were super helpful.  This one is my favorite because it comes with free labels that you can put on roller bottles:  Essential Oil Recipes and Labels.  I also found great DIYs on making body butter and lip balm.  The possibilities are endless.  My essential oils Pinterest board is below and you can see some of the great EO pins that I have chosen.

Follow Thistle Dew Fit’s board Essential Oils on Pinterest.

Third,  I mixed some of the essential oils I ordered with the carrier oils in the roller bottles and I have been using them for about a week.  I especially love the Good Night and the Muscle Soother.  I have been sleeping sounder since I started using the Good Night . I roll that mixture on the soles of my feet each night and I LOVE it. Not sure why the directions say to role it on the bottom of your feet, but it works!!!

EO roller bottles

Fourth, I ordered the supplies to make body butter from Bulk Apothecary.  (This is also not an affiliate link.  I just chose them because of their great prices and high quality products.)  I haven’t received the supplies yet, but when I do I will write a follow up post on how those “experiments” go.  The supplies for body butter are the same as for the lip balm, so I’ll be ordering some lip balm tubes and trying that too.  I hope that you have found these simple steps helpful.

Have you used essential oils?  If yes, what are your favorites and how do you use them?  I’d love to hear about your EO experiences.
